What is expected of Phillips Ambassadors?

A Phillips Ambassador will 1) successfully complete a study abroad program in Asia; 2) receive a financial scholarship of $5000 toward costs associated with a study abroad program; 3) complete the 3-credit hour Phillips Ambassadors Academic Course; 4) perform the required outreach activities upon return. The combination of these components allows the student to get the most out of their experience abroad as well as bring those experiences to others back home.

On what basis are Phillips Ambassadors selected?

Phillips Ambassadors will be selected based on the following criteria:

  • Strong communications skills.
  • Intellectual curiosity and ambition.
  • Academic achievement.
  • Evidence of generous service to campus and community.
  • Previous record of leadership.

The Phillips Ambassadors Scholarship Program is open to UNC students across all majors.

Students applying to broad-based academic programs in Asia that incorporate field research, experiential learning and/or internship components will be given preference. Preference will also be given to students who have not previously participated in a university study abroad program in Asia.

Who can apply?

UNC-Chapel Hill undergraduate students in good academic standing with a minimum GPA of 3.0 who are accepted to an eligible summer or semester study abroad program in Asia (see qualifying programs for the complete list) can become Phillips Ambassadors. Duke University undergraduates are also encouraged to apply to select programs. Graduating seniors are not eligible to apply.

When are applications due?

Applications must be submitted by the deadline for the term for which you are applying. The specific date will be included in the online application for your program.

Do I have to be an Asian studies major or have a background in Asian languages?

Not at all! There are a wide variety of academic programs in Asia. A study abroad experience in Asia will benefit and enrich all participants, regardless of major, academic focus, or future career goals and will be one of the highlights of your time at Carolina.
