Phillips Passport Initiative

The Phillips Passport Initiative now provides funding for all undergraduate students at UNC to obtain their first U.S. passport—no merit requirements, no GPA minimums—just a commitment to global exploration. While the initiative especially encourages first-year and new transfer students to apply, every UNC undergraduate is eligible. The mission of the initiative is to empower students to explore global experiences early in their time at Carolina. All students who apply will receive a passport and access to resources to help them explore a wide array of global opportunities including studying, interning, service learning, and researching abroad.

Although studying abroad is not a requirement, more than one-third of Phillips Passport Initiative recipients have already studied abroad in locations around the globe with their new passports! University Communications recently shared a piece about Phillips Passport Initiative, “Free Passports Helped These Tar Heels Explore the World.”

Note: Phillips Passport Initiative does not award funding to students who have previously held a U.S. passport book or who are seeking to renew a U.S. passport book, or students who are not eligible to apply for a U.S. passport book. Students in their final semester at UNC are not eligible to apply.
